Boxing the Cake for Delivery

Boxing the Cake for Delivery.

Delivering a fragile cake can be the most stressful part of a cake art business. Recently a lovely customer of mine noticed the box I transported a wedding cake in while watching one of my publicity videos. A clip from that video is below. He was wondering if the tall protective box was custom made or not. I shared with him some simple tricks for boxing large or tall cake designs using 2 or 3, standard 16 x 16 x 5.5 inch cake boxes (40cm square).

Generally speaking, one should consider decorating on a common size cake board. My favorite for most cakes was 16 inc diameter circle. By taking two boxes and cutting off the flap opposite the lid, they can then be set inside each other, allowing one to create even a 16 x 16-24 inch rectangle depending upon how far one slides them into each other. For the round though, the two boxes facing each other should should be pushed close together as possible. Watch this animation and the process is very clear. The flap of one of the boxes can also be used then to score the top of the box with masking tape.

For larger cake boards, one can use three cake boxes of the same size. Cut off the flap like above on all three. Then also cut off the left or right side flaps of two of them. Then cut the third box down the middle. Its two halves can then be tape to the appropriate left or right side of the other two boxes to whatever width one desires up to about 24 inches. Have a yardstick handy to make sure both sides are taped to exactly the same width.

Hope this trick of the trade keeps all your fragile work safe during delivery.

Happy decorating! Scott
